The Making of Calcutta (Cambridge University Press, 2018).

The Department of History is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Debjani Bhattacharyya as Professor and Chair for the newly designated History of the Anthropocene - the only Chair of its kind in Europe.
Prof. Bhattacharyya is internationally renowned for her work in the legal and environmental history of South Asia and is the author of Empire and Ecology in the Bengal Delta: The Making of Calcutta (Cambridge University Press, 2018). She is currently working on a new monograph on the Indian Ocean region, entitled, Climate Futures’ Past: Law and Weather Knowledge in the Indian Ocean World. Ranging from the eighteenth century to the middle decades of the nineteenth century, the book will examine how the marine insurance industry's risk calculations shaped weather knowledge, colonial oceanographic sciences and predictions of climate futures in derivatives markets.
Prof. Anne Kolb and Prof. Martin Dusinberre, co-directors of the Department of History, said: "We look forward hugely to working with Prof. Bhattacharyya. Her innovative approach and evident passion for her subject will enhance our expanding profile in global history, while simultaneously strengthening the Department's long-established research focus on the history of social transformations."
Prof. Bhattacharyya said: "I am honored to join the intellectual community of the University of Zurich and a department which has been producing field-defining research in social and economic history. I look forward to melding colonial and economic histories with research on the Anthropocene, climate and environment at UZH in the coming years."

Prof. Bhattacharyya will take up her appointment on 1 February 2022, after the retirement of Prof. Philipp Sarasin.
