Commerce, consulates and confessions: a transnational history of the Protestant merchants of the nation suisse in eighteenth-century Marseille

Laurent Burrus has earned a B.A. in Humanities and Social Sciences at the Université de Provence in Aix-en-Provence (2008) and a bi-national M.A. in the same field at the Université de Provence (Aix-en-Provence) and the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen (2009). During his studies, the Erasmus exchange programme allowed him to spend a year at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (2007-2008). Topic of the M.A thesis: : «Le notaire aux Caraïbes. Le cas de Saint-Domingue au XVIII^e siècle» [The Caribbean notary: the case of eighteenth-century Saint-Domingue].

For several years, Laurent Burrus has worked for publishing houses in Geneva (Droz), Paris (Erudist, Boccard) and Strasbourg (ELiPhi). In 2019 he earned an M.A. in History at the University of Lausanne with a master’s thesis on «La communauté suisse à Marseille au XVIII^e siècle: les logiques spatiales, sociales, économiques et familiales d’un collectif étranger» [The Swiss community in eighteenth-century Marseille: spatial, economic and family dynamics of a foreign group]. Thanks to a one-year doctoral fellowship at the University of Bern, which he was awarded in 2019, he began to develop his current PhD project. In 2020 he joined the University of Zurich.
