Christian Marek is a historian of the Ancient World and epigraphist. His fields of research are the ancient cultures of the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East, from Archaic Greece to early Byzantium, and Greek Epigraphy. He has conducted epigraphical and archaeological field work in different parts of Turkey for more than 40 years and has edited stone inscriptions from ancient Asia Minor. He has given guest lectures in the US, UK, Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Switzerland and Turkey. his latest book is a History of the Roman Near East.

Current projects are the edition of a supplement of inscriptions from Kaunos/Caria, the edition of a corpus of inscriptions from Pompeiopolis/Paphlagonia, the edition of an archaic verse-inscription from Teos/Ionia.

Short Biography

Christian Marek received his Ph.D. in Ancient History at Marburg University, Germany. He was Research student at Jesus College, Cambridge, U.K. 1976/7, Feodor Lynen-Scholar of the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung at the University of Ankara 1986, Fellow at the IAS Princeton, NJ 1992/3, and Gerda Henkel-Scholar at Brown-University, Providence, RI, 2012/3.
