HERA Grant zu «Uses of the Past»

September 2016 in Prag eröffnet.

HERA grant on «Uses of the Past»

The University of Zurich’s consortium research partners are Heidelberg University, which will be leading the project, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, and the London School of Economics. Zurich’s Principal Investigator is Prof. Dr. Martin Dusinberre.

The project, entitled East Asian Uses of the European Past: Tracing Braided Chronotypes, will investigate how East Asian societies, principally China and Japan, appropriated key historical moments from the European past (such as the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the Reformation and the Industrial and Scientific Revolutions). These moments were then invested with local meanings so as to become frames for narrating East Asian pasts, such that European pasts became part of a global circulation of historical knowledge in the modern period.

The HERA project was launched in Prague on 15 September 2016, and will run for three years. The Department of History is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Birgit Tremml-Werner, who will work as the project’s HERA postdoc for this period.
